The mystery is fair, but the publisher (Forgotten Books) has used very low quality optical character recognition software an no editing. For example, pages 60 and 61 are missing and there are duplicates of page 62 and page 63. There are many other errors in words and in punctuation. There is a disclaimer in the front of the book which states that Forgotten Books uses state of the art technology to reconstruct the book - however, if this is true, the state of the art is from the very first optical character recognition software that was developed. Any editor would have caught the problems (at least the major ones like missing and/or duplicate pages). The disclaimer also states that any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of the historical work - this is not true because I purchased an original copy of this book through Abe Books in order to be able to read the entire mystery and not one of these errors was in the original work. I strongly suggest that any serious mystery reader forgets about buying any book published by Forgotten Books.Product details

On the edition the letter referred to at the end of Chapter 3 of the book is missing. I looked the book up on and found the missing letter on page 26 of the following paperback edition (/Initials-Only-Green-Anna-Katharine/dp/1113431334/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1305578307&sr=1-2#_). As other letters appear in this book I'll have to look them up as well.
Despite this inconvenience I am enjoying the book. I sometimes relish the simplicity of mysteries written in the early 1900's.
points out that "This is book 11 of 12 in the Ebenezer Gryce series". Actually, the author has aged her detective so that in this book he is the Grey Eminence for a young colleague who is at the Center of the investigation. Nothing is lost by starting with this book it is entirely self-contained. The mystery to be solved is the unexplained death of a society woman in the midst of a crowded lobby. She bears a wound but its source initially cannot be ascertained. When it is, apparently, the Coroners jury declares her death to have been a suicide. Neither venerable Ebenezer Gryce nor his colleague are satisfied with the verdict. The rest of the book is dedicated to the search for a killer and how he could have killed the women. There are different narrators but the story moves along seamlessly. The style is mildly dated but in no way strange to contemporary readers. Characters are quite well drawn and the plot tricky.
Katherine Ann Greene's reputation is justified. She may not ordinarily be ranked with the Masters (and Mistresses) of crime today, but that is just the whim of publishers. It is quite worth the time you will spend reading; cost-less, it is a great bargain.
A detective story first published in 1911, "Initials Only" deals with the case of beautiful young heiress Edith Challoner dropping dead in the writing room of a luxury hotel while nobody is near her, and no shot is heard and no bullet found in the deadly wound. Did she take her own life by stabbing herself through the heart with a paper knife, later found on the floor in the hotel lobby (but with no traces of blood on it)?
Her grieving father refuses to believe the coroner's verdict of suicide, and employs an investigator who is actually part of the police force but acts on his own for most of the time.
Among Miss Challoner's personal belongings are found letters signed with initials only, O.B. Who is O.B., and what - if anything - does he have to do with her death?
Sweetwater, the investigator, finds out the identity of O.B. pretty soon, but instead of answering the questions the case poses, he only brings up more mysteries.
In the end, though, the truth is revealed by the murderer himself, and we are left with a ray of hope for the grieving people left behind in possibly finding love and happiness again.
The wikipedia entry about Anna Katharine Green dubs her as "the mother of the detective novel", having created not only the series detective later made so famous by other authors, but also inventing the prototype for Miss Marple (nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth), the girl detective (Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth) and using legally accurate descriptions of police procedures and scientific methods employed in both the murders and their solvings.
Her first mystery novel, "The Leavenworth Case", was already a bestseller ten years before Sir Arthur Conan Doyle entered the stage with Sherlock Holmes. At one time, there was even doubt on whether her books could have really been written by a woman!
Green's life (1846 to 1935) was not quite average for her times; she seems to have been a rather unconventional lady with very much her own head on her shoulders. For instance, she married relatively late (at 38 years) and a man seven years her junior.
"Initials Only" held a few surprises for me, but none of its twists and turns was so illogical or incredible as to appear ridiculous. The language and descriptions of places and people very much reflect their times. I really enjoyed reading this mystery, and will maybe look for more (free) ebooks by the same author.
